“I feel happy going to work in the morning. I always dreamed of working and supporting my family. Today, my dream became a reality. I am proud to be contributing to the rehabilitation of my city”.

Firas is 37 years old from Deir ez Zur. He always dreamed of working and providing for his family, especially after his parents passed away. Firas moved in with his uncle’s family, which consisted of six members. Now, he works to support them all. Firas was able to challenge his intellectual disability and become a valuable member of the debris removal team in Deir ez Zur. He is one of 299 labourers working in the solid waste management project, implemented by UNDP as part of the UN Joint Programme intervention in Deir ez Zur, with funds from the European Union, Norway and Italy. The programme aims at removing debris and solid waste in the city resulting from 12 years of crisis. Around 26,000 cubic meters of debris and solid waste were removed through the project improving the lives of 1,495 people.

Firas never let his disability stop him and his community appreciated his work and will to contribute and made him feel like a superhero.
